At the recent Comic-Con International convention, after showing a teaser trailer for the film, Superman Returns, director Bryan Singer answers questions from the fans and told them that the film will be as much action as it is love story.
Singer previewed a three-minute clip of the new “Superman” flick for several thousand eager fans at Comic-Con and drew a standing ovation from the crowd.
Picking up several years after the 1978 “Superman” film, this movie follows the Man of Steel’s return to Earth after unsuccessfully attempting to reach his home planet, Krypton. The film is something of a reboot in that the three sequels to the original film never took place.
“It’s a story about what happens when old boyfriends come back into your life after they’ve been gone a few years and things have changed,” Singer said. “Superman has always been about Lois Lane, Superman and Clark Kent and this love triangle between these three people who really are only two people,â€?
When Clark Kent returns to the Planet, he finds that Lois Lane, played by Kate Bosworth, now has a new boyfriend and a child in her life. When she finds out that Superman is back, she takes out her frustrations with the Man of Steel by writing a cynical story and telling him, “The world doesn’t need a savior, and neither do I.”
The film revolves around the popular D.C. Comics superhero. Superman battles with Lex Luthor and a mysterious killer from Krypton who has come to hunt down the Man of Steel. Marsden will play Lois Lane’s love interest as Richard White. Laurie will play Perry White, editor in chief while Huntington plays reporter Jimmy Olsen. Eva Marie Saint will play Martha Kent, the adoptive mother of Clark Kent/Superman.
Marlon Brando is Jor-El in the film in one very small scene and computer graphics are used to some extent to recreate his look. Kevin Spacey is signed on to play the role of Lex Luthor in Superman Returns.
For over 11 years, Warner Bros. has been trying to revive the Superman movie franchise. Singer, best known for directing “X-Men” and “X2,” said he had personal reasons for wanting to jump from one successful comic-book franchise to another.
“I identify with Superman,” Singer said. “I am adopted, I am an only child, and I love the idea that he comes from another world, that he’s the ultimate immigrant. He has all these extraordinary powers, and he has righteousness about him.”
“I’ve always been a fan of the original ‘Superman’ series,” he continued. “The George Reeves [1950s TV] series and the Richard Donner 1978 film. I’ve always had an idea for how I would make a Superman film if I was given the opportunity, and suddenly the opportunity presented itself and I leapt on and took advantage of it.” As a result, Singer had to bail on spearheading the third “X-Men” installment, “X3.” That duty ended up falling into the hands of Brett Ratner, who, coincidentally, was initially slated to direct the original “X-Men” movie.
“Superman Returns” will fly into theaters in June 30th of 2006.
The film itself will run probably over two hours and whilst incorporating the John Williams theme it will mostly be new music by John Ottman.
